What to wear for your session??..

Updated: Dec 23, 2023

One of THE most common questions from clients I receive when preparing for a session is "what should I wear?" So I have decided to do up a brief blog post to assist you when laying out your options for your session. (I also have some great tips in my new client guide.)

Firstly, lets discuss some of the don'ts..... (these are my suggestions only! For what I believe will or won't photograph well, it's not set in stone).

1.) Don't be completely "matchy matchy" with your family. Coordinate colours instead!

Choose a few colours, maybe 2-4 (depending on the size of your family) and have multiple variations of those, not the exact same clothes. Colours like navy's, mustard's, and neutrals work really well. My personal preference is definitely organic, natural earthy tones. These really compliment my style of photography in particular. Steer clear of overly loud, bright, neon colours.

2.) Don't wear logos/too many busy patterns.

Logos and branded labelled clothing really distracts from capturing your authentic selves. Try to choose clothing that doesn't take away from what you're trying to achieve with the image. Also brands and labels can go in an out of fashion all the time and you're more likely to achieve a more timeless image without them. With patterns a good rule is to choose a nice bold pattern and only roughly one for every three people.

3) Don't be too casual.

I understand we are in Australia and it can be very hot at times and especially if you are thinking of having a beach session you might be tempted to dress quite casually. I discourage that. While you generally wouldn't head to the beach in your Sunday best this is your photo session and it's pretty special. I would recommend you leave the singlet and shorts for after your session (although at the beach bare feet works well too.) Long flowy maxi skirts and dresses are a great smart casual option when you're preferring a more casual look.

Another big no for me are bra straps that show. Choose a bra that is completely covered by your top.

4) Don't wear something you're not comfortable in.

If it doesn't fit you, either too big or small you're going to be uncomfortable and it will show. Even if it's a new style that you wouldn't normally choose for yourself or don't particularly like, your photo session is not the time for it.

Here are some Do's:...... things I highly recommend.

1) Be as natural as possible

Natural makeup for the ladies, not more than you would normally use. Hair that frames your face is more flattering in photographs than a slicked back ponytail from experience... my beautiful baby girl looked like a boy :( Also with your hair out it can catch the light which I think can look magical. Win win!

2) Bring spare clothes for the little ones

It can't hurt to bring a spare shirt or even some wet wipes for the littlies just in case...... sometimes we may have to bribe with food.

3) Accessorize!

A nice necklace, scarf, belt or hat can real add depth to your ensemble, and also gives you more room to be creative with your colour coordinating skills.

4) Remember the underwear....

I don't mean don't forget to wear it - well not only that - but make sure your underwear (bras included) is not visible through your clothes. Underwear to match your skin colour is always the best option especially under white.

5) Ask questions

I am always available to assist you in your decisions if you need a hand. Show me your ideas, ask for suggestions I'm there for you to ensure you we can create some timeless art together.
